President of the European Council insulted by UK Independence Party MEP Nigel Farage.

Herman Van Rompuy, the first official President of the European Council. A Belgian politician of the Christian Democratic and Flemish party, was attacked in parliament for not being a strong enough leader by UK Independence Party MEP Nigel Farage attacked Van Rompuy with insults, asking him  “Who are you?” and stating that Belgium is a “non-country.”

  1. There is an old right-wing prejudice in Britain that Belgium does not exist. In Margaret Thatcher’s day, Downing Street officials had the good sense to do so privately.
